Why East County?
Energy experts have identified eastern San Diego
County as one of the best areas in the United
States for developing renewable resources. In fact,
a recent study found that just a small portion of this
region could generate as much as 900 megawatts
of wind power – enough electricity to serve the
needs of more than 500,000 homes.
East County has a unique opportunity to build a
cleaner, more sustainable future by tapping into
renewable resources. Increasing our use of green
power produced by the sun and wind will help
create new jobs, generate tax revenues to fund County services, improve air quality by offsetting
greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
That's why the State of California is requiring utilities to provide 33 percent of their electricity from
renewable sources by 2020. More wind and solar energy will also
help meet the goals set forth in the state's landmark global warming law, which requires greenhouse
gas emissions to be reduced to 1990 levels over the next 10 years.
